Marketing boosts the promotion of business! I think this is one clever idea to promote lawyers today. Programs can be used and they can be really helpful! Personal injury seems to be a general case, and it's better to know that reaching a lawyer can be just as easy as surfing the net now.

Patrick,

Thanks for the comment. What's the point of planning long-term when you know it's going to change by necessity as the technology changes. What you call planning or the marketing process I would call goals. Goals are great to have, and by their nature occur in the future.
But goals are not plans.

I agree that the size and decision making infrastructure of many law firms may necessitate a "marketing plan" to sell to the partners, but let's not confuse the reality of what that really means... a sales document.

I'm very open to the possibility that somebody, somewhere out there has in fact authored a viable and honest long-term law firm marketing plan, I just haven't seen one. To the contrary, I have a collection of documents from various marketers (some who claim impeccable academic credentials) that are sales documents that tell attorneys what they want to hear, many fabricated from thin air.

I suggest that you take a look at Peter Sims' book "Little Bets." That's what I'm advocating.

Interesting post however it strikes me that you are making the same mistake that you accuse traditional marketeers of - they and you have the "only" solution that works. What do I know? I have been involved with professional services marketing for over 10 years and I would be the last person to say that I have all the answers, its just not possible due to the variations between personnel at different law firms. All the technology and marketing advice in the world is worth nothing unless the client is willing to put themselves about and finish the sale. All we can do is lead the legal horse to the river, once there, its on its own. I believe there is a place for long term marketing strategies because law firms due to size and decisions making process, require a marketing substrate to work from. The trunk of the tree if you will. Departmental marketing plans can branch off and due to the size of the departments be more adjustable, flexible and reactionary to changes in the law, environment etc. Where does tech come in? Tech facilitates and enables the user to execute the various points in the marketing plan. Not a lesser cousin, but a vital ingredient in the marketing process. We had a saying when I was at school "Bullshit baffles brains" and that is what you seem to be trying to do. Marketing bad. Tech good. Actually saying that "I can make your marketing more efficient and increase ROI" would seem to me to be a better more honest way of selling yourself and your company.

There are a lot of good books out there that can be even more helpful than consultants. Nobody knows your business like you do, and a good book educates without meddling.
